To start, stop or transfer service, call your local IREA office with your service address and the dates you want to make the change. If you are stopping your service, be sure to give us your forwarding address for the final bill. Please note that we need at least three days’ notice to change your service. Also, keep in mind that we do not schedule changes for weekends or holidays.
To start service for a new construction site, call your local IREA office with a work order. Be sure the work order includes the property owner or company’s name, address and the property’s legal description. You can also call our headquarters in Sedalia.
To start service for a Commercial business, call your local IREA office or our headquarters in Sedalia. We need your company’s full name, federal tax ID number, address of where you want the service, the billing or mailing address (if it’s different from the service address), phone numbers and an e-mail address. You’ll also need to either make a deposit — that will be refunded after 12 months’ good payment history — or provide a letter of credit.
To start your residential service, call your local IREA office or our headquarters in Sedalia. We need the full name and social security number of each person who will be on your account, along with the service address, billing or mailing address (if it’s different from the service address), phone number(s) and e-mail address(es).
Woodland Park Office
New construction procedures apply to the construction or installation of a new facility that does not yet have electric service. New homes and businesses where construction has been completed and electric service has been installed are not considered new construction from an electric service standpoint. Consumers requiring electric service at these locations need to view our Start/Stop Service page in the tab above for information on how to obtain new electric service.
Extending Power to a New Property
When an individual contacts the Association regarding new construction, a work request will be opened. To begin this process please contact Engineering Services, at the local IREA office, with the property owner’s information, legal description (subdivision with filing, block and lot or township, range and section) and service address (if available) for the property. A Contract Authorization form will need to be completed and submitted along with the applicable design fee (see links below for downloadable forms). The work request will then be issued to an engineer. The engineer will contact the owner or the designated project manager to schedule a site meeting.
By Colorado law, the developer must acquire a letter of agreement from the utility in connection with local land use applications. The Engineering Department will evaluate the project and respond to a "will serve" letter request.

New Construction FAQs
Bringing electricity to a new construction site has its own set of procedures and requirements. Check here first to see if your question(s) can be answered. If not, call your local IREA office or our headquarters in Sedalia.
How does the builder order the secondary lateral?
A billing account must first be established. A Builder Lateral Order form should be completed and submitted to Engineering Services via fax (303)660-8906.
How long does it take to install my electric service after meeting with an engineer?
The time to complete a work order can vary depending upon the number of requests our Engineering department has to process. An average time period from when a work order is requested to the installation of the electric line extension is six to eight weeks; however, this time period is dependent upon many factors.
How is an easement obtained, if required?
The IREA engineer will provide the customer requesting the line extension with the necessary easement documentation; however, the customer is responsible for contacting the property owner(s) to obtain the required signature(s). Any questions regarding easements can be discussed with the engineer at time of design.
The service has been inspected, but the meter has not been set. Why?
It could be that IREA does not have an account established for the service location; the building department has not released the address to IREA; or the serviceman was unable to set the meter due to a conflict. You will need to call IREA Engineering Services for the reason for your specific address.
Do I have a choice of overhead or underground facilities?
The property owner usually has a choice unless there are existing county or city ordinances. If underground facilities exist for the tapping point, IREA does not install overhead facilities. During the design process, the engineer can offer different options; however, it is the customer’s responsibility to be aware of any restrictions.
Can I pay for the line extension with a credit card?
No. Payment must be made by check or cash.

How do I acquire a “Developer” or “Will Serve” letter?
Colorado Law requires developers to have a utility letter of agreement for local land use purposes. As such, the Lands and Rights-of-Way Department at IREA will review the project and respond to a “will serve” letter request. Contact our Engineering Services department for further information.
IREA has a net-metering program for members who own or operate a qualifying net-metering system.
If you use solar, wind, biomass, new hydropower, recycled energy or hydrogen fuel cells — and your generation capacity is less than 10 kW for your home, or 25 kW for your commercial or industrial business — your generation system is eligible for IREA’s net metering. Your system must comply with certain interconnection and certain standards.

How it Works
The energy you generate directly offsets energy that IREA provides, on a one-for-one basis. If you create more energy than you use, a credit is carried forward and offset against your use in future months. Within 60 days after the end of each calendar year, IREA cuts you a check for that year’s credit balance. This check reflects a rate that’s equal to the Association’s average wholesale cost of power for that calendar year.
If you are a residential member and don’t generate enough energy with your system, IREA will bill you at the current residential rate. Also, you will be billed an existing service charge, even when you produce more electricity than you use — and therefore, don’t use any of IREA’s energy.
The same rules apply to commercial services that are interconnected.

The Association is currently offering a Time-of-Use pilot program to a maximum of 500 residential customers and up to 50 customers in each other rate classification (commercial, large power, industrial, and irrigation). The On-Peak hours are from 4pm to 8pm (4-hour window) and the Off-Peak hours are from 8pm to 4pm (20-hour window) daily.
Customers that are capable of reducing their electric consumption during the hours of 4pm to 8pm daily can save on their monthly electric bill. As customer usage varies, an estimate of savings or recommendation of if the TOU rate would benefit a specific consumer is not possible to provide; however, a general statement would be that a customer would need to use 15% or less of their total daily consumption during the on-peak hours and 85% or more during the off-peak hours.

How long will it take to get the meter installed?
Upon receipt of the meter inspection from the applicable building department (city, state, county), a service order will be issued and completed within three to five business days barring any unforeseen issues on site. If you know IREA has received the meter inspection, it has been five business days and you still haven’t received your meter, contact Engineering Services to see what, if any, issues may have arisen.
How do I get more than 200 amp service from a meter pedestal?
Up to 400 amps are available by installing two separate runs to two separate breakers. You will need to contact Engineering Services and request IREA install a double breaker kit in your meter pedestal once your electrician adds the second breaker. There is no charge for this service.
Can I cut the seal on my meter?
It is not recommended. Please call our Operations Department for more information.
What if I need to work on my meter housing?
You will need to contact our Operations Department to schedule a meeting with our serviceman. For your safety, the power will be disconnected and reconnected by IREA personnel only.
How do I know what type of breaker fits in the meter pedestal?
There are a variety of meter pedestals from different manufacturers within IREA’s territory. Most meter pedestals will provide a list of breaker types on the inside of the door that houses the breaker. If you are unable to access this information, please call the IREA Engineering Services Department at our headquarters in Sedalia.
I want a pole, transformer, pedestal, etc. relocated on my property. What should I do?
Call Engineering Services at (303) 688-3100 or 1-800-332-9540 to start a work request. An engineer will then be able to meet with you to discuss options for a design and provide an estimated cost.
