Time-of-Use Metering
Time of use rates encourage conservation through cost saving to the consumer by shifting electrical consumption to “off-peak” periods. This rate is a “rider” to the existing rate affecting the purchased power cost only. All other applicable rates, rules and regulations of the existing rate are still in effect.
How it works
As opposed to purchasing all of your electricity for a flat rate, Time-of-Use (TOU) metering offers different rates between "on-peak" and "off-peak" periods. A higher rate is charged for usage during on-peak periods while a lower rate is charged for usage during off-peak periods. Listed below are the on-peak and off-peak usage periods:
- The on-peak period is 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., Monday through Sunday.
- The off-peak period is 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., Monday through Sunday.
The amount you save when switching to a TOU rate depends on the amount of energy you consume and at what time you consume the energy. For most residential customers it will mean lifestyle changes such as running your dishwasher, laundry, air-conditioners, ranges, computers and other electrical devices in the off-peak hours (11 p.m. to 7 a.m.). The more you can shift your electrical usage, the more you will save.
By switching your electrical consumption to off-peak hours, Intermountain will reduce the peak demand on the electrical infrastructure, which occurs within the on-peak hours. By reducing the peak demand, IREA reduces the wholesale power purchased costs from Xcel Energy and IREA passes the savings to the consumers making a difference.
There is no cost to physically change to the TOU rate. A new meter will be issued to you and set free of charge. There will be a monthly administrative charge added to your billing account anywhere from $5 for residential to $100 for large commercial accounts. This administration charge is in addition to any other service charges applicable to the existing rate. The monthly minimum will still apply and the minimum time requirement is one year (12 months).
Eligibility
Time-of-use metering is an option available for the majority of IREA’s consumers. Existing residential, commercial and industrial accounts are eligible. Lighting, Interruptible and Water Heater services are excluded.
How to Sign Up
